BHPI IN THE COMMUNITY
The Children’s Center Art Adventure Night
BHPI volunteers joined The Children’s Center for a night of arts and crafts. The Children’s Center uses art as a fun, non-threatening way of exploring social interactions and life experiences. BHPI brought activities designed to provide art education and appreciation in a safe environment, allowing children to express themselves and build self-confidence.
Annual Beautification Day in Southwest Detroit
Each spring, BHPI joins Southwest Solutions in Detroit for their Neighborhood Beautification Day. Volunteers work in teams to create and clean up gardens, plant flowers, spruce up parks and lots, and enhance the look of selected locations in Southwest Detroit. BHPI was a proud sponsor of the 12th Annual Neighborhood Beautification Day. Volunteer participation on Saturday, June 2nd included BHPI staff and their guests.
Neighborhood Service Organization
Volunteer groups host monthly birthday celebrations for residents, and October was BHPI’s month. BHPI volunteers served pizza and set-up games for residents of the Bell Building to participate in. The Bell Building provides permanent, supportive housing for homeless adults along with the support to help them stabilize and turn their lives around. At the time that BHPI hosted the Birthday Bash, there were over 150 formerly homeless adults living in the Bell Building. Volunteers from BHPI hosted the bash, dressing up in costumes and providing refreshments and activities for the residents.
World Medical Relief
BHPI staff took some time to sort medical supplies to be distributed to local, national and international communities in need. Our volunteers enjoyed unboxing, categorizing and packing a wide array of medical supplies to be sent to those in need. Here at BHPI, we take great pride in helping World Medical Relief achieve their mission of giving back.
Gleaners Community Food Bank & Annual Summer Food Fight
In 2011, BHPI began an annual food drive benefiting Gleaners Community Food Bank. In the years since then, BHPI staff has donated more than 15,000 meals to the local community. BHPI’s staff also sorts and packs food items at Gleaners Detroit Distribution Center. Staff, friends, and family look forward to this event every year. 2018 represented BHPI’s 5th year of participating in the Summer Food Fight. Our effort in the food fight provided thousands of meals for those in need on our community. As a team, we take great pride in our annual participation and are proud to partner with Gleaners, an organization that does so much good in Southeast Michigan.
In December of 2018, BHPI staff volunteered with Focus:HOPE to give back to our local community. Volunteers from BHPI were able to interact directly with members of our community by distributing food to the elderly, as well as working with children in the early education center.
Mittens for Detroit
Over the holiday season, BHPI volunteered with Mittens for Detroit to sort, count and distribute mittens and gloves to children and adults in need. Mittens for Detroit collects and distributes to a network of nearly 100 agencies, nonprofits, schools, shelters and medical facilities. BHPI staff enjoyed giving back and keeping our community warm over the holiday season.
Another way BHPI shows our commitment to the community is through sustainability. BHPI is continually working to reduce our footprint and create paperless processes. While we have not completely eliminated paper, we have made great strides in that direction. Our GreenTeam is made up of volunteers who see that all cardboard, as well as plastic, aluminum, and glass waste produced within our organization get recycled.
